Mr Osei, who had run the Year Eleven gardening club from a shed behind the bike racks, found him by the urn. He was smaller than Dev remembered, and he still wore the same tan cardigan. "You still owe me a bulb," he said, and it took Dev a moment to understand he meant the crocus bulbs they had planted in yoghurt pots, the only project from that year they had actually finished.

They slipped out to the shed while the others argued about the DJ. Inside, under a dusty seed catalogue, sat a shoebox of pressed flowers Osei had been saving for twenty years, each one labelled in biro with a class name. Dev found his own, faded almost to nothing: a pink hibiscus, flattened flat, with a note underneath in capitals he didn't remember writing.

He laughed until he had to sit on an upturned bucket. Osei didn't laugh. He just took the daisies from Dev's jar, tucked them behind the seed packets as if they had always belonged there, and said the rose bed by the staff car park would flower again in June, if somebody remembered to water it.
