Lily, rose and daisy sleeve
Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, with a red-pink lily at the top, green leaves and a large red rose in the lower half. White daisies with yellow centres are scattered around the rose and lily. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greens and blues in the background and visible highlights on the petals.

The seed merchant's daughter had been told the Marlow lily would not flower in clay like theirs, so she planted it in the cracked yard behind the chapel anyway, where the rain ran off the slate and pooled in the gutter. Every morning through that wet spring she carried a bucket up from the well and poured it slowly at the root, counting the drops the way her father counted coins, because counting was the only thing that kept her hands steady.

It bloomed in June, rust-spotted and taller than the gate. The petals were the red of a fox's coat held up to lamplight, and beads of water sat on them even on the dry days, as though the flower had been crying into its own leaves. Old Tamsin from the mill came to look at it and said nothing for a long while, then went home and came back with a rose cutting wrapped in damp sacking. The daughter did not ask where she had got it. Roses, Tamsin said, never liked to be the only thing in a garden.
They planted the rose at the foot of the lily in the autumn, and the next summer the daisies came up on their own between the stones, white and sun-struck, with yellow hearts like small suns that had lost their way. The daughter let them stay. By the third year the yard was so crowded that the chapel bell-ringer complained he could not reach his door, and the lily stood over all of it, bending a little towards the light, as if it had been waiting for someone to stop trying to tame it.
