Lily and swirl tattoo on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A foot rests on a dark, textured surface, showing a tattoo of two lilies with spotted petals and curling vine swirls that extend toward the ankle. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading across the petals to give them depth. The image is taken from an angle with the pale skin lit evenly against the dark background.

The gate had been wrong for a fortnight before Hal Pengelly would admit it. The scrolls at its foot curled the way he wanted, and the tendrils ran up the bars like ivy looking for a window, but the two lilies sat stiff as tin cups, their spots punched in too evenly. Mrs Ardagh, who had commissioned the piece for the churchyard at Porthcurno, had asked for something that looked as if it had grown there.

He took the gate apart on a Saturday, cutting the lily heads free with the old angle grinder while the tide came in under the slipway. Every petal went into the coal bucket. Hal had learned the trade from his father, who said iron should be forgiven its mistakes by being heated and bent again, so he brought each stamen to a glow the colour of a fox and let it cool slowly in the wet sand.

By Monday the lilies had lost their symmetry. One leaned towards the sea, another had a petal folded back as if caught by wind. He spotted them with a centre punch, not in rows but wherever his thumb wanted to press, and he left a gap at the throat of the larger bloom, where a tendril had bent too far to be fixed.

Mrs Ardagh came down on the Thursday with a flask of tea and stood before the gate for a long time. Then she laid her palm flat against the cold bar, close to the gap, and said it looked as though someone had been picking flowers there and had stopped to rest. Hal did not tell her the gap was an accident. He poured her tea into the flask lid and let her keep the thought.
