Floral skull tattoo on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large tattoo on the outer thigh shows sunflowers, pink roses, a dahlia-like bloom, a butterfly and green foliage, arranged in a rounded, skull-like outline. The petals and leaves are rendered with soft shading and fine highlights to give a three-dimensional, painterly effect. Bright pinks, oranges, yellows and greens dominate the design against the skin, and a hand with painted nails is visible at the top left of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you with the cold hands, and mind the candle before it drips on the dog. Back when the river in Caddery Vale ran backwards on Thursdays and nobody thought it odd, there lived a gardener called Orla Fennick, who grew nothing but things that turned their faces to the light.

When old Queen Maudrey died, the court wanted a memorial to carry at the funeral, and the chamberlain asked Orla for a skull made of flowers. He said a skull was simply what death looked like once the petals were stripped away, so it ought to be shown honest. Orla went quiet, then said she would build it, but not in grey. She packed the hollow of the skull with pink roses for the cheeks, a dahlia the colour of a plum for the brow, and set two sunflowers in the eye sockets, each as wide as a dinner plate, so the dead queen would have something to look at. She stitched butterflies in among the leaves and let the green run down the jaw like ivy on a wall.

On the morning of the procession the chamberlain came with shears, meaning to trim the thing into something tidier. He lifted his hand toward the sunflowers, and they had already turned, every one of them, toward the gate where the sun was coming in low and gold. He stood there a long while. Then he laughed, a short surprised sound, and told his men to carry it as it was.

Orla never told anyone how she had bred those sunflowers to follow a sun they could not see at night. She only said that a skull is easier to bear when something in it is still reaching. The butterflies rode the procession all the way to the church door.
