The mask had hung above the bread bin since the trawler left Peterhead, and nobody aboard the Morven Rose would admit to putting it there. Cook Agnes Pell took it down each morning, shook the flour from its ears and hung it back again, because the painted grin across its jaw seemed to bring the lads into line better than any shout she could manage.

Her nephew Danny had carried it on in a carrier bag, a gift from a seller at the Lisbon market who swore the blue was real enamel. The badge on the brow had flaked to orange in the damp, and the gold scrollwork at the chin was worn to bare tin. Forty days of swell had taught the crew to say good morning to it.

On the night the wind backed north-east, the galley lamp swung on its chain and the mask swung with it. For one heartbeat the fixed teeth seemed to be laughing at the pot Agnes had left on the hob. She stood very still, ladle raised, watching the shadow of the little red web cross the ceiling. Then the stock boiled over, hissing, and the cabin filled with the smell of scorched onions.

Danny came down at four with his oilskins streaming and asked if he could have the mask back for the harbour dance. Agnes told him it could go over the side for all she cared. She hung it on its hook anyway, grin to the bulkhead, and set the porridge on.
