The lamp would not turn past midnight, so Mairi carried the oil up the hundred and four steps herself, her oilskin hood pulled tight against the spray. Her grandmother had kept the light on Scarra Head for forty years and had never once let it go dark, and Mairi meant to be no different, though the fishermen said the sea had grown thin and hungry since the spring.

At the top the glass was furred with salt. Beyond it, the rocks below were thick with something she had not expected: flowers. Sea pinks and bindweed had pushed through every crack in the gallery, their leaves curling over the iron rail as if the rock had decided to be a garden. Her grandmother had said that where the old keepers lay buried, the ground grew whatever they had loved, and Mairi had never believed her.

She cleaned the glass with her sleeve and trimmed the wick. The flowers leaned toward the lamp as it caught, their petals turning pale in the beam. Out on the water a boat that had been drifting toward the Teeth swung its bow about and came in toward the light, slow and steady, until its lantern bobbed in the harbour mouth.

When she came down at dawn the bindweed had climbed to the door, and a single white bloom sat on the top step. She left it there. The light had kept its keeper through the night, and the keeper, it seemed, had a garden of her own now.
