Winged heart tattoo on lower abdomen
Other · Colour · Photo
A close crop of a torso in a white bikini, with a tattoo across the lower abdomen. The design shows two outstretched wings with feather detail in blue, purple and teal, meeting at a pink heart-shaped centre. The lines are soft and the shading is layered, set against smooth skin and a blurred background.

On the third night of the gale, the lamp at Carrick Skerry began to gutter, and Ada Pennick climbed the iron stair with a tin of paraffin under one arm and her brother's last letter folded in her apron pocket. Nobody on the mainland had asked her to keep the light. The keeper, Mr Hollis, had gone ashore in September and never come back, and the Board had sent a man who sent back nothing but forms.

The lens room smelled of brass polish and cold glass. Ada trimmed the wick until the flame stood steady, then wiped the prisms with her sleeve. Through the salt-blurred glass the sea had turned the colours of a bruised peacock: blue at the crests, teal in the troughs, a violet smear where the cloud broke. Her brother Joe had painted wings like that on the bow of his little boat, the Gannet, and beneath them a pink heart he said was for their mother, who had never once seen the sea she was named after.
She read the letter again by the lamp's spill. Joe wrote that he was coming home on the spring tide, that he had found work on a Tyneside drifter, that he would bring her a proper coat. The last line said only, Keep the light on for me, Ada. She had kept it on for a year.
At four in the morning a shape rose out of the murk, a fishing smack with its sails torn to rags, and the beam swept over it once, twice, and held. Ada watched the boat turn toward the gap in the rocks. When the sun came up she went down the stair and did not look for the name on the stern, because she already knew the paint.
