Flowers, butterflies and stars down a back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A bare back shows a vertical trail of colourful flowers, butterflies and small black stars. The flowers have soft shading in pink, red, purple and teal, while the butterflies use lighter washes and fine outlines. The design winds from the upper back to the lower back and is framed by a pale studio backdrop.

Marta had counted the stars from the bell tower for nine winters, and each night one more seemed to slip off the map. She kept the tally in a tin box under the bread shelf, its pages ink-stained and cross-hatched, and the figures never agreed with the sky. On the morning the ledger went missing, she found a trail instead: a line of small black stars pressed into the frost along the orchard wall, leading past the beehives toward the ruined mill.

Following it cost her a pair of boots and most of her patience. The stars ran in a loose spiral, and between them grew flowers nobody had planted, five petals each, opened in shades of rose, plum and a teal like river glass. Pale wings hovered over them, washed thin as breath on a windowpane. Brother Anselm, who swept the cloister and never looked up from the flagstones, had once told her that every blossom the orchard lost came back as a moth. She had thought him soft in the head.
At the mill she found the ledger open on the sill, every page turned to blank, and a note beneath it in her own hand: Count the flowers instead. Beside it lay a heap of dried petals and a single star cut from black card. She sat in the doorway until the light moved across the floor, counting. There were forty-one, then forty-two, and then she stopped trying.
When she came back down the hill, Anselm was waiting at the gate with the tin box under his arm. Well, he said. How many? She told him the truth, which was more than she had meant to tell anyone, and he nodded slowly, as though she had passed a test he had forgotten setting.
