Red poppies, butterflies and camera on a back
Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo
A vine of red poppies with shaded petals runs down the back, with black leaves, swirling stems and small butterflies scattered around them. At the lower end, a shaded vintage-style camera with the number 1989 printed on its body sits among the foliage. The poppies are in red and the rest of the work is in black and grey, with soft shading on the flowers and camera.

Frost had kept the yard hard since Monday, and Nell Hadley had the tin on the kitchen table before the kettle boiled. Inside were three things: a camera with 1989 pressed into its metal base, a bundle of bank letters nobody had opened, and a roll of film still sealed in its canister. Her father had never mentioned a camera. He had never mentioned much, least of all the summer the top field went red.

She carried the tin out to the dairy, where the old sink still ran cold, and tipped the canister into the dark. Eleven winters of farm accounts had taught her patience, so she worked slowly under the red bulb her grandmother had wired above the bench, counting the spool through her fingers. The negatives came up like smoke through water. Poppies first, a whole slope of them, then a fence post crowded with pale butterflies, then a man's hands holding the camera up against a low sun.
The last frames showed the lane. A gate stood open onto a field that was supposed to have been ploughed under years ago, and beyond it the hedges were thick with blossom and the same swirl of stems that ran up the gatepost. Someone had written on the back of the packet in pencil: Bring the boots, we'll be late for the bus.
Nell hung the strip from a bulldog clip above the sink and watched the wet film drip onto the draining board. By morning the frost had furred the window, and the single bright frame near the end, a red bloom against green, was the only colour left in the room.
