Flying raven in black ink
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette of a raven or crow in mid-flight, with one wing raised high and the other angled down and the legs tucked beneath the body. The edges are loose and brushed, with dry-brush streaks and grey wash at the feathers, giving a painterly, ink-on-paper feel. The bird sits centrally on a plain white background with generous empty space around it.

The officer at the checkpoint turns your passport over twice, as if the back might have changed its mind about you. Behind you the lorries idle in a line that stretches past the last floodlight, and rain has started hammering the tin roof of the booth. You keep both hands visible on the wheel, the way you were told to.

Above the barrier a raven lifts off the razor wire. It takes its time, one wing hauled high like a man stretching after a long shift, the other dropping low, and it clears the lamps without a single feather catching the light. The officer glances up at it, then at you. "Business or pleasure?" "Neither," you say. "Taking my aunt's ashes to the coast." That part is true, though you have not decided yet whether to say it aloud.
The stamp comes down with a thud you feel in your teeth. He hands back the passport and nods toward the far gate, where the raven has settled on the upright of the barrier, black against the wet white paint, watching the car with the patience of something that has read every border ever drawn. You drive through. In the mirror the bird does not follow. It shakes out its wings, unhurried, folds them, and for a moment it is nothing but ink dried on a page.
