Forearm tattoo of the white Ford script logo on a blue banner with grey smoky shading and ragged edges.

Ford script logo on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the Ford script wordmark in white lettering across a blue banner. The banner has ragged, torn-looking edges that are shaded in grey and white to suggest depth. The photograph is taken close up on a forearm against a dark background with warm light, and the lettering sits across the centre of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The banner came down off the dodgems gate last night in a gust off the marsh, split clean along the middle, and Mr Tabor wants it back up by Saturday or he docks my wage. I've been on the trestle since six with a pot of cobalt and a fitch brush no wider than a pencil, copying the old letters back on from the ghost of them still showing through. Every stroke wants to lean forward, as if the whole word is running for the ground.

The trick, Dad always said, is to paint the tear before you paint the letters. Grey first, then white for the lift of the cloth, so the rip looks like it's giving way underneath rather than sitting on top. I did the left edge three times. Got it right on the third, when I stopped trying to be neat about it.

Then the wind dropped and the big wheel stopped halfway through its turn, and a girl from the candyfloss stall came over with two teas and asked whether I was the one painting the banner that used to hang over the wheel. I said probably. She said she'd stood under it as a kid waiting for her brother to come off the carousel, reading the letters out loud to herself until the organ started up again.

I didn't tell her the blue is a mix I got wrong twice before Tabor let me try again. I just gave her the second cup.
