Forget-me-not sprig on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a cluster of small blue forget-me-not flowers with yellow centres, a thin sprig with buds, and dark leaves that fade into lighter grey shading toward the edge of the design. The flowers have soft, painterly colour blending while the leaves and stems are rendered in black and grey with fine detail. The photograph is taken from behind, with the tattoo placed at the edge of the frame beside a pale blue off-shoulder top against a plain light background.

Dear Pat, the lift is out again, so I'm writing this on the stairs between the fourth and fifth floors, where the light from the stairwell window is decent and nobody can hear me swearing at the biro. I've taken your cuttings up to the roof garden as you asked. Sixteen of them, wrapped in damp kitchen roll and a freezer bag, and I've planted them in the tyre planters by the water tank where the sun gets round at about four.

The forget-me-nots were the only thing left in the bed after the council men came with their strimmer in March. You remember Dad used to say they'd grow anywhere a person had given up. I didn't believe him until I saw the clump under the drainpipe on block C, all blue and flat as spilt paint, with little yellow eyes in the middle. I dug up a fistful with a teaspoon, which is how Mrs Dunmore caught me, and she didn't tell me off. She gave me a jam jar.

Tell Joe the bench is still there. Someone has carved a heart in it with a key, and under it, in smaller letters, the word Maureen, which I'm choosing to believe is not a threat. I sat there yesterday with the flask and watched the ones on the roof lean when the wind came over the estate, all those little sprigs nodding like they had something to say and wouldn't say it.

If they take, I'll send you a photo. If they don't, at least they'll have been planted by somebody who wasn't trying to be brave about it. Love, Nell. P.S. The lift is still out.
