Small teal jellyfish on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A small jellyfish with a teal and blue bell and trailing thread-like tentacles sits on the upper shoulder near the collarbone. The bell is shaded with soft, blended colour, while the tentacles are drawn in delicate black fine lines that fade out across the skin. The plain grey top and pale background keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sea came up the lane on the night of the big wind, and by morning the boarding house at Gullet Point had three inches of brine in its kitchen and a jellyfish in the bread bin. Mrs Pryce said it was a sign. Her son said it was a jellyfish. They argued about it over the teapot while the gulls walked the wet cobbles like they owned them.

The jelly was a small blue thing, no bigger than a saucer, with threads trailing from it like the hems of a wedding dress. Mrs Pryce had a rule about visitors and she would not have it dying on her floor. So she carried it down the lane in a colander, past the chapel and the bakery and the net-loft where old Tamsin Hoy sold bait out of a biscuit tin, and she set it at the edge of the low tide.

It did not go at once. It hung in the shallows, bell pulsing slow as a held breath, and the threads drifted out behind it in the green water. Tamsin came down with her tin under one arm and watched it for a long time. "That one's been up the coast before," she said. "Goes where the tide tells it. Always comes back to the same bit of sand."

Mrs Pryce looked at the sea, then at the empty colander in her hands. She laughed, which surprised them both, and went home to fry the bacon. The jelly drifted out past the breakwater with the ebb, the blue bell of it flickering once against the grey, and by the next spring it was back at the same bit of sand, where it waited for someone to bring a colander.
