Four calligraphy characters with English labels
Black and grey · Flash
Four large black brush-stroke characters sit on a plain white background, arranged in a two by two grid. Each character has an English label in orange beneath it: dragon, patience or endurance, book and peace. The strokes are bold and fluid with varied thickness, and the image is entirely black ink on white with no shading or colour.

Dear Ilse, the ink in the east wing has finally faded to the colour of weak tea, which the Keeper says proves the Book of Quiet Rivers is older than the walls. I have been copying it for eleven years now, one character at a time, and the Keeper still stands behind my chair each morning to tell me my brush is too eager. Patience, he says, is not waiting. It is making each stroke as though nothing else in the world is owed your attention.

Yesterday the dragon came down from the scaffolding. The painters had been at the gatehouse since spring, restoring the great red beast above the arch, and that morning they finally opened its eyes. Old Tamsin climbed up to look and came down weeping, saying the thing had looked back at her. I told her dragons are only plaster and pigment, but I went up myself at dusk, the lamp caught its jaw, and I understood what she meant.
The last page of the book is only three words long, and I have been saving it. Peace, it says, and then a line about the rivers returning to their beds. Tonight I will write it. In the morning the Keeper will bind the volume and carry it to the gate, where the dragon will keep watch over it for another hundred years.
I have decided I will not rush the final stroke. I want my hand to be the last thing in the book that is still wet.
