Four flying birds across the lower abdomen
Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows a torso in a open red and black check shirt and dark jeans, with four solid black bird silhouettes in flight arranged in a diagonal row across the lower abdomen. The birds are rendered as flat, dense black shapes with little interior detail, and they decrease in size and rise in height from left to right. The background is a plain light skin tone and a dark blurred surface, with the composition centred on the tattoo.

Dear Tom, The buzzards came over Hollin Field this morning while I was pegging out the sheets, four of them, and I stood with a peg in my mouth counting the way you used to count the lambs in March. The biggest one came first, low over the hedge where the Pritchards cut the elms last winter, and it dragged its shadow across the wet grass like a coat being pulled off a chair.

Your mother says I shouldn't write so often, that the post from Liverpool takes a week and you'll be busy with the ship's papers. I told her a week is nothing. I have waited longer than that for a kettle to boil. Mr Cole at the shop says the Atlantic is calm this time of year, though he said the same about the winter you went, and you came home with a cough and a story about a dog that could open tins.
The four of them went up over the chapel roof one after another, each a little smaller and a little higher than the one before, the way you climbed the gangway at Hull with your kitbag swinging. I watched until the last one was a speck above the weathervane, and then I went in and put the kettle on for no reason at all. I have counted them four times since, from the back step and the window and once from the lane, and I always get four.
Keep your collar turned up on deck and write when you reach land. Tell me what the birds look like out there, whether they follow the boats or just look down at them.
Your loving Nan, Ellen
