Dandelion seeds turning into birds on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a dandelion seed head on the right, with thin stems and small seeds drifting left across the skin and turning into bird silhouettes. The seeds and birds are drawn in fine black lines and solid dark fills, with soft shading on the dandelion head. The ink is black only, set against warm, slightly reddish lighting, and the design runs diagonally across the shoulder and upper back.

The canvas went to a scrap man in Carlisle on Tuesday, so tonight Abernethy's Travelling Marvellous Circus is one spotlight in a borrowed field outside Penrith. You stand under it in the old costume with the sequins gone grey, holding the last dandelion clock Mr Abernethy coaxed up in the back of the lorry, because the ring horses ate everything else in March. Nobody in the eleven rows of folding chairs is breathing loudly. They are waiting for the bit where the seeds leave the stalk and turn into birds, a trick of wire and black silk your nan sewed the year you were nine.

You blow. The seeds lift in a neat arc and the wire birds rise on their threads toward the rigging, which no longer exists, only the tops of two ash trees and a sky the colour of weak tea. Halfway across the field a boy in a red anorak stands up to follow them with his whole face. You want to tell him they were never going to stay. Mr Abernethy always said the trick was in the letting go, and he said it the night he sold the elephant too.

When the lights come down you walk past the lorry and find one real seed caught in the lining of your coat, pale and weightless as a breath. You hold it up to the last of the sun and blow once, gently. It drifts west over the hedge, over the wet grey road and the stubble beyond, and you watch it until there is nothing left to watch, then you put your hands in your pockets and go to find the others.
