Four purple owls in a row
Colour · Flash
The image shows four stylised owls standing side by side, each with large round eyes and feathers rendered in dense hatching and shading. The linework is purple, with darker areas built up in the wings and chests to give volume. The plain beige background and even spacing between the birds suggest a presentation sheet of designs.

Shut the door, the wind's coming up off the pass, and I'll tell you about the four owls on the wire above Carrick Gap, because my grandmother swore to every word and she never once lied to a customs man.

The post at the Gap had a corporal called Hollis who counted everything. Sheep, sacks, the nails in the hut roof. Each dusk he chalked a mark on the lintel for every traveller who passed under the lamp, and each dawn the marks came up wrong, because somebody had always walked through unseen. He blamed the wind. The owls, who sat along the telegraph wire in a neat row like clerks waiting for their pay, blinked at him and said nothing.
One November a man came up the track with a cage under his coat and a face like wet paper. Hollis reached for his ledger. The eldest owl dropped from the wire, landed on the gatepost, and turned its great round eyes on the cage. Then the second, the third, the fourth, all four in a line, and Hollis, who had never believed in anything he could not chalk, found he could not lift his pen.
The man walked on through the Gap without a single mark on the lintel. Hollis asked him later, over tea gone cold, what he had been carrying. The man only smiled and said he had carried nothing but the owls' attention, which is the one thing a border can never write down. Hollis never chalked another line. He sat on the step at dusk and counted the owls instead, and there were always four.
