Barn owl in flight, pencil drawing

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A barn owl with a pale heart-shaped face is shown in flight, wings spread wide and tail fanned, with loose feathers drifting around it. The drawing uses fine graphite linework and soft tonal shading to model the feathers, face and wing edges. It is drawn in greyscale on a plain white background with the owl filling most of the frame.

Dear Ines,

The owl came in over the weir at first light, low enough that I felt the wind of her wings on my face before I saw her. She still had the tally cord knotted to her leg, the one from the Thornbury roost, and she settled on the gate post as if she had been waiting for someone to scold her for being late. Her face was that pale heart the old books call a dish, and she looked at me with the same narrowed patience you used to give the kettle.

We have forty-one owls left on this side of the estuary now. Mostly barn owls, because they never cared where they nested so long as the loft was dry and the voles were thick. Last winter the frost took the hedgerows and the voles went with them, and Tomas wanted to shoot the lot, saying they were eating what grain we had. I told him the grain would be gone by spring anyway. He didn't speak to me for a week. The owls kept coming back to the loft over the cart shed regardless, and their feathers drifted down onto the flour sacks like pages from a longer book.

This morning's knot was different. Someone at Thornbury has tied it in the old way, three loops and a long tail, which means they counted and found more birds than they expected. I have not decided whether to tell Tomas. I have decided to keep the cord and send you the feather that came loose when she shook herself on the gate. Hold it to the window. The grey on it is the same grey as the sketch you pinned above my bed, the bird with her wings thrown wide as if the sky were still something you could simply leave.

Come home before the frost does. I will leave the loft door open.

Marta
