Dear Tomas, the fox has taken to sitting on the wall at dusk, and I have stopped throwing stones at it. You will laugh, but it is the same vixen who took two of Father's hens in the spring. She trots along the top of the ditch as if she owns the field, and yesterday she stopped under the elder to stare at the hare-hole by the gate where the grey doe has her young.

The doe does not run. I watched from the window with the bread still in my hands. She sat up on her hind legs in the long grass and let the fox come close enough that I could see the pale fur at its throat, and then she turned, slow as a priest, and went down into the roots of the bramble. The fox waited a long while. Then it lay down with its nose on its paws, just beyond the thorns, and stayed there until the moon came over the ridge.

I have thought about that all week. Mother says the animals made a bargain before any of us were born, that the bramble is the gate and whoever passes it first owes the other a favour. I told her that was nonsense, and she said only that I should look at the leaves on the branch by the well, which have turned silver underneath, as if someone had brushed them with frost. Come home before the harvest and bring the good ink. I want to draw this before the fox forgets what it promised.
