Fox chasing a rabbit across the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A fox runs after a rabbit across the upper chest and shoulder, with loose sketched foliage and leafy stems filling the space around them. The design uses thin, unshaded black linework with some hatching and soft sketch-like strokes. Only black ink is used, and the composition wraps diagonally from the left shoulder towards the right side of the chest.

The fox came over the wire at Corrow Gap a little after three most mornings, always at the same loose strand beside the old pillbox, and always with a rabbit a length ahead of it. I had the night shift that winter, which meant a flask of stewed tea, a torch with a weak left eye and a logbook where I wrote down whatever the lorries didn't give me. So I wrote down the fox.

Nobody else seemed to notice much. The rabbit was grey-brown and quick and went under the barrier arm as though it carried a passport in its ear. The fox ran with its nose low through the thistles and the reeds that grew up the drainage ditch, its brush streaming out behind it like a loose sleeve, and every few yards it would stop, lift its head at the stars and go on. I kept the torch on them until the hedge swallowed them both. Then I'd tick the box marked nothing to declare and pour the last of the tea.
One night in February the rabbit stopped dead on the white line painted across the tarmac. It turned round and waited, ears flat, while the fox skidded to a halt on the far side of the road. Neither of them moved. I stepped out with the torch and the rabbit looked at me the way the clerks at the depot look at a form that has been filled in wrong. Then it hopped sideways into the hedge on our side, and the fox sat down in the middle of the road as if it had finished its business.
I didn't stamp anything. In the logbook I wrote: one fox, one rabbit, both crossed, neither in any hurry, and I went home with the sky going pale over the ridge.
