Dear Nell, the rain hasn't let up since Thursday, and the Saturday market at Hallam Square has turned into a river of tarpaulins and dripping awnings. I'm writing this from under Mr Oduya's stall, where we've been hiding among crates of old frames. He bought the whole lot from a house clearance in Sheffield, forty-odd ornate things with chipped gilt and scrolled corners, and told me to scrape the worst of the grime off before anyone sees them.

Most are plain, but one has a painted panel of a pig in a waistcoat, pink cheeks, holding a teacup as if that were the most natural thing in the world. Beside it, someone long gone had painted a scarlet parrot on a branch, and the leaves curling round the edge are green as pond weed. I spent the morning with cotton buds and a bowl of warm water, and when the old varnish lifted under my thumb, the colours bloomed as if they'd been waiting for the air.

A woman came by at noon, shaking out her umbrella, and stopped dead at the parrot. She asked if it was for sale, and I said yes, then wished I hadn't, because she tilted her head and said she'd take the pig too, if we'd knock a bit off for the weather. Mr Oduya named a price twice what I'd have said. She paid in damp twenties and laughed all the way to her car, holding the two frames against her chest like they were children.

I've kept the pink satin ribbon she dropped by the till. Tonight I'm going to hang the empty frame over my bed and wait for the next wet Saturday. Love, Pip.
