Traditional leg sleeve with roses and birds
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
Two legs wearing black lace-up trainers are shown from the ankles up to the lower thighs against a pale wall. The skin is covered in dense traditional style tattoos, including a pink rose, a dark ornamental medallion, birds, butterflies, flowers and a round clock-like motif. The bold black outlines and solid fills are combined with red, green, blue and yellow ink, with black shading across the calves.

Ten to eleven, and the clock over platform four has stopped again. You tap the glass with your biro, the way Mr Pardoe taught you before he retired to Weymouth, and the minute hand shivers and sulks where it is. Umbrellas, a tin of barley sugar, a wedding ring once, claimed by a man who wept into his collar before the 11.42 pulled out.

On the Thursday, a parcel sits on bench six, wrapped in oilcloth and tied with red thread. Nobody saw who put it there. Inside is a folded map of the line from 1952, a short dagger with a mother-of-pearl grip, and a pocket watch with a swallow painted where the twelve should be. A luggage label is tucked under the thread: For whoever keeps the hatch. You have never once been addressed like that.
The swallows nest in the iron above the buffers every spring, and you have counted them the way other people count sheep. That night, when you wind the watch, every one of them lifts from the girders at once and goes black against the sodium lamps, and the watch begins to tick. You hold it to your ear and then to the stopped station clock. The minute hand jerks forward, and the platform clock starts again with a cough of old machinery.
In the morning the bench is bare. Someone has left a single pink rose on the step of the hatch, its stem wrapped in red thread, and the clock above platform four says exactly the time it should.
