The river between the two villages had no bridge, only a rope of twisted vine strung from a fig tree on one bank to a stump on the other. Every market day Tomas crossed it with a basket of cassava on his head, and every market day the parrot on the far stump asked him the same question: which bank was he truly from? He always answered the bank he was standing on, and the parrot always laughed in its bright, uneven way.

One morning the vine was wet with rain and the basket was heavier than usual. Halfway over, a red frog no bigger than his thumb dropped from a leaf above and landed on the rope beside his hand. It was the color of a cut mango, and it said nothing at all, only looked at him with black, patient eyes. Tomas, who had been warned all his life never to touch the little red ones, held still until the rope stopped swaying.

When he reached the stump, the parrot was quiet. Tomas set down his basket and asked it, for once, what it had been waiting to tell him. The parrot cocked its head towards the water, where the frog had leapt and where pink flowers had opened overnight along the bank, and said that a river only has two banks for the people who need them. Tomas thought about this all the way to market, and when he came home the frog was sitting on the fig tree, and he left it a piece of cassava and no more questions.
