The skull was already painted on the cutter's hull when Mrs Abernethy sent for me, which is why I never asked who had done the eyes. Nobody in Gullwick painted eyes that tight. Each socket held a rosette of circles inside circles, fine as lace, and when the lamp caught them they seemed to turn a fraction slower than the sea.

I scraped the old varnish for three days and found nothing under it but a pencilled triangle, its apex pointing at the wheelhouse, and a second sketch of a cross with its arms bent like a broken key. Harold Pike, who owned the boat before the drowning, had kept his drawings in a biscuit tin. Inside the lid was a single line in brown ink: Count the rings before you go out.

I counted them. Eleven in the left socket, twelve in the right. On the morning the Marigold sailed with Mrs Abernethy's nephew at the tiller, the tide was cutting a channel I had never charted. I stood on the quay with the tin under my arm and watched the triangle on the hull catch the first light.

They came back at slack water with the mast down and the cross chalked on the wheelhouse door, all four arms bright. The nephew said the sea had lain flat as a plate around them the whole way home. I didn't tell him I had known the number. A skull on a boat is never only decoration. It is a count, and you had better do the sums before the tide does them for you.
