Full back tattoo with script and florals

Traditional · Back · Mixed · Photo

A woman sits with her back to the camera, showing a large back piece that covers much of her upper and lower back. The design combines floral and leafy motifs in red, green and yellow with black outlines and shading, alongside script lettering across the lower back. The composition is shot indoors against a patterned fabric, with her dreadlocks tied up and teal lace underwear visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Inspector Dora Ferrante had seen smuggled puppies, a sock full of cut diamonds and a man who tried to bring a tortoise through in his coat, so the wooden crate of rose cuttings at the Dover lane did not look like much. Then she read the label. Someone had written the names in a looping hand, each one underlined twice, and beside the Latin she found a line that was not Latin at all: to understand, becoming.

She rang for the botanist from the liaison desk, who arrived with a magnifier and a cardigan buttoned wrong. He turned the cuttings over in their damp moss, red bloom at the tips, green leaves already curling, a yellow stripe along one stem like a sunset caught in wire. Nothing was prohibited. The paperwork was in order, except that the grower's address was a glasshouse that had burned to the ground in March.

Ferrante took the crate to the back room herself and lifted the lid. The moss smelled of rain and old pennies. Under the cuttings lay a folded sheet in the same hand, a list of stops, each one a village she had driven through as a girl on the way to her uncle's farm. The last line said only: plant them where the ground remembers.

She stamped the form and let it through. Some things were worth more on the far side of a line than the near one, and she had never once managed to say why.
