Colourful arm sleeve with roses and an eagle
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The photograph shows a heavily tattooed arm sleeve, with a grey camera, red and grey roses, and an eagle with a red rose on the upper arm. A teal and red heart-shaped design sits on the upper back, and small marks are visible on the fingers. Bold outlines and solid colour fills dominate, with soft natural light and the body partly covered by the arms.

Dear Tom, the notice about the bridge is still taped to the bus shelter, and I've taken the old Pentax off the shelf the way you asked. It's the one with the cracked prism that Mrs Halloran pawned in March, the one she swore she'd redeem before the harvest fair. She never did. Yesterday I found it in the drawer under the till, wrapped in a tea towel that still smells of her kitchen, with a roll of film inside, wound on to the last frame.

I developed the film in the cupboard under the stairs, the way Dad showed us, with the red bulb and the wet fingers. Most of it is the wood behind the church, the beeches going gold, a pair of wellies on a doorstep. Frame twenty-two is different. Someone stood at the edge of the forest with the camera held high and photographed a red rose pinned to a fence post, and above it a bird with its wings spread wide, nearly cut off by the top of the frame. I know that rose. It's the one painted on the sign above the Crown, the one her husband paid for the year he went to sea and never came back from.
I didn't tell anyone. I printed frame twenty-two twice, posted one to her daughter in Leeds and pinned the other above the workbench, next to the lens cap I found in the hedge in August. Last night the wind pulled the bridge notice clean off the glass and I spent twenty minutes chasing it down the lane in the dark.
Come home soon. The camera's cleaned and the film is loaded, and I've left the back door on the latch.
