Full sleeve of skulls and swirls in grey and pink

Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

Two arms are shown in a full sleeve tattoo featuring skulls, swirling smoke-like shapes, hands and small lettering. The linework is shaded in greys and black to give a realistic, three-dimensional finish, with bright pink-red bands running across the sleeve. The photo is taken from the torso down, with the arms angled toward the camera against a dark background.

Dear Tullius, you will think I have gone soft since you left for the quarries at Puteoli, but the tomb wall on the Herculaneum road is finished, and the widow paid me in full, two denarii and a jar of Falernian she had no use for. The skull I painted above the door has the hollow look you wanted, grey as river stones, its teeth set so the lamplight catches them. Beside it I gave the smoke a curl like the breath of a horse on a cold morning, and let it climb past the lintel where nobody will think to dust it.

The red was the trouble. Old Marcus would not sell me vermilion without the mint's stamp, so I went down to the cinnabar seller by the fish market and ground my own in a mortar my wife has forbidden me to use for bread. Three days I worked it with oil and egg until it stopped stinging my eyes. I ran it in bands across the plaster, rough, as if the wall had split and something warm was leaking out. The widow stood where you are standing now and asked whether it was blood. I told her it was the colour of the sun going down over the bay, which is what she wanted to hear.

Beside the door, small as a child's writing, I scratched two words into the wet lime: HIC MANENT. I did not cut them deep. Wind will take them in a few winters, and then only the hands will be left, lifting over the skulls as if they could hold the smoke down.

Write soon, and tell Mother the lamp oil is cheaper in Stabiae. Do not believe the carter if he says the road is safe after the rains. Gaius
