Classical figures and wings full arm sleeve

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The triptych shows a full arm sleeve with a winged figure, a classical statue in profile wearing a wreath of flowers and leaves, and a group of robed figures rising across the shoulder. The shading is soft and detailed, with fine linework in the feathers and drapery. A Greek key pattern wraps the forearm near the elbow, and the image is entirely in black and grey ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stone woman at the harbour mouth had lost her nose to a winter storm, and the fishermen of Kalyra said she was looking for it. Every spring they hung a wreath of wild thyme and yellow broom around her brow, so that she would not feel the wind so hard. Old Demetrios said the wreath was for the ferryman's daughter, who had gone out past the breakwater in March and come back walking on the water's edge, singing in a voice like a gull's.

The winged boy was carved on the lintel of the chandler's shop, and nobody had painted him in living memory. His wings had been chipped by hail until they looked like the fins of a grey fish. When Sofia Lamprou dropped the pot of blue paint on the step, she swore at it, then went quiet, because the boy had turned his head a little towards the sea. She scraped the flakes away with her thumbnail and found that the wings underneath were still whole, every feather cut clean.

She went down to the water that night with a brush and the last of the paint. The statue watched her from the wall, and the wind carried the smell of thyme up from the rocks. Behind her, in the dark, a line of robed figures came up out of the surf, shaking the sea from their hems, and climbed the steps two by two without a sound. Sofia kept painting until the first boat came in, and by then the old woman's wreath had been renewed, and the boy had his wings back.
