Galaxy deer with antlers on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A deer's head faces forward with antlers made of fine bare branches, and its blue body is filled with small white stars and a galaxy-like texture. Below the head, soft pink cloud shapes fade into a black silhouette of grass or branches at the base. The linework is fine and dark, the colour is soft and blended, and the design is centred on the upper arm.

You will not believe the week I've had, so I'll put it on paper before I lose my nerve. The rain came in on Monday and didn't leave, and the market on Shudehill was nothing but dripping awnings and men selling broken radios to nobody. I was packing up my lamp stall at half nine when the stag stepped out from between the fishmongers' crates. Antlers like bare hawthorn, grey with wet. Its flank was blue as the inside of a mussel shell, and when it breathed, little white stars swam up under the hide and went out again.

Nobody else looked. The man selling phone cases walked straight through its legs and swore at the puddle. I stood very still, the way Dad taught us for foxes, and the stag looked at me with those dark soft eyes that had a whole night sky in them. I understood it wanted nothing from me except to be seen.
Then it turned, and behind its shoulder the rain went pink, the way the sodium lamps catch cloud over the Irwell. The pink spread down its neck like smoke. At its hooves the market floor dissolved into black grass and tangled twigs, and the stag walked into them as though stepping into a wood it already knew.
I haven't sold the green lamp. It's still on the shelf, unlit. Come home at Easter and I'll show you the spot. Some nights I think I can still smell the cold of the hill on my coat.
Love, Nell
