Black and grey realism tattoo of a deer head with antlers, a flying bird, daisies and roses on the outer thigh.

Deer, bird and flowers on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A deer's head with large antlers sits at the centre of the design, with a small bird in flight above and a wreath of daisies and roses below. The deer and roses are rendered with soft shading and fine detail, while the daisies and leaves use lighter linework. The tattoo is shown in black and grey ink on a thigh, with denim shorts and a brick wall in the background.

Dear Marian,

You will not believe what the hedge gave us on Saturday. We were still arranging the daisies in jam jars along the trestle tables when Father's old spaniel started barking at the gap by the orchard, and out walked a stag as bold as a bishop, antlers snagged with ivy, and stood looking at the marquee as though he had been invited. Mrs Dunn dropped a whole tray of sponge. Nobody moved for a full minute except the bird.

That was the swallow, or something like it, that had been nesting under the eaves of the barn all spring. It came straight over the top of the tent, dipped low past the bride's veil, and settled on the stag's left antler for the length of one breath before lifting off again towards the willows. Gerald swore it was a sign. Gerald swears a great deal about signs, and I have never once seen him right about one.

The stag did not stay for the speeches, which was a mercy, because the vicar had wild roses in his buttonhole and no sense of the danger. The animal went back through the gap the way he came, slow and unhurried, leaving only a scatter of crushed petals on the grass where he had stood. Ruth gathered them into her apron and pressed them between the pages of the guest book.

So if you ever wondered whether our wedding was a good one, I can tell you that a stag came to see it and went home without a single complaint. I think that is a fair review. Come in June and bring your good shoes. Love, Eleanor
