Galleon and waves on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black and grey tattoo of a three-masted sailing ship with rigging and billowing sails, set among crashing white-tipped waves at the lower edge. Above it, a dark sea and a bright lightning streak lead toward a ghostly figure with rope-like tentacles and a metal ornament. Fine shading and high contrast give the image depth, and the design wraps diagonally across the arm against a plain black background.

Old Tamsin kept the light at Scarrow Head for thirty winters, and she told the young keepers that the sea remembers every ship it has swallowed. On the night the Marigold Vane came round the point, the wind was pushing from the west and the sky split white over the water every few minutes.

The galleon was three-masted and far too large for those rocks. Her sails were still full, though no crew could be seen in the rigging, and each flash of lightning showed her timbers bright as bone. Tamsin climbed to the gallery with her lamp and turned the great lens toward the reef, the way her mother had taught her, until the beam lay across the bow like a hand held up to stop her.
Then the sea rose beneath the hull, and out of the dark came the thing that lived under Scarrow Head. It had rope for arms and a brass ring at its throat, and it coiled round the mainmast as gently as a fisherman tying off a mooring. The galleon groaned. Tamsin did not look away. She kept the lens steady, and wherever the beam touched the creature it recoiled and loosed its hold for a breath.
The ship slid past the reef into open water and was gone by dawn. Tamsin found a coil of wet hemp on the gallery steps and a single brass ring, and she hung the ring on a nail above the lamp, where the keepers would see it every night.
