Spartan battle full sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full sleeve of helmeted warriors with spears and shields in a battle scene, with a skull, a snarling lion-like beast and a bare tree in the lower sections. The shading is soft and detailed, using smooth gradients and high contrast highlights across the warriors and shields. The ink is black and grey, and the composition wraps around the arm with the figures repeated across its width.

The road out of Kharpur runs straight for forty miles before it remembers it has a bend, and by the second hour you have stopped checking the mirror. The dust from the lorry ahead hangs in the air like smoke that refuses to settle. Your brother Tamas sits beside you with his boots up on the dashboard, naming the dead trees he swears he can tell apart by shape: the dead olive, the dead thorn, the one that looks like a man holding his arms out.

Nobody has driven this road in summer for years, not since the wells went salt. You took the contract anyway, hauling shields and spear shafts from a props yard in the city to a film crew who would pay in cash and not ask about insurance. The crates ride loose behind you, their painted rims knocking against the boards. At the ridge a lion carved from a boulder watches the road with its jaw open, and Tamas crosses himself the way he does at every crossroads.
Near the bend the crew is waiting, a line of extras in red crests standing in the heat as if they were told to hold their ground until someone shouted. The director wants smoke. Tamas lights the flares, the warriors lift their shields in one motion, and for a moment the road looks like a battle that finished long ago and never bothered to leave.
When the shot is done, a man with a clipboard asks whether the shields can go back in the crates. You stand a long time with your hand on the nearest one, the paint still tacky, thinking how easy it would be to keep it, to drive home with a little of that old ground on your palms.
