Galloping horse tattoo across the upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a horse in full gallop runs diagonally across the upper back, with its head at the upper left and its hindquarters fading toward the lower right. The linework is loose and sketchy, with soft shading and broken edges that dissolve into the skin around the legs and tail. The pale skin and the thin strap at the lower left frame the design against a plain, evenly lit background.

Tom Pell said she was a stray from the hunt stables at Crane Hall. Hanna said she was the last of a herd that the old lord had driven into the marsh and never counted again.

When the boy Edwin went looking for her with a halter and a loaf of bread, he found only a trampled ring of bracken and a single white feather snagged on blackthorn. He followed the tracks along the drove road until the light gave out, and then he simply stopped, because the hoofprints ran on past the edge of the fields and into nothing, each one fainter than the last, as if the ground had decided to forget her.
He walked home with the bread still in his coat. At the gate his mother asked where the horse was, and he told her the truth, that she had not wanted to be caught. His mother nodded, as though this were the most sensible thing a horse could say, and set a second loaf on the sill for the morning. By dawn it was gone, and the only mark left on the frost was a long, loose spray of hoofprints heading east, wide and unhurried, toward the sea.
