Bird perched on a branch across a shoulder blade
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph shows a tattoo of a thin, bare branch with several twigs and a small bird perched near its centre, on the upper back beside the shoulder blade. The linework is fine and dark, with the bird rendered as a solid silhouette. The composition is tight on the back and shoulder, with the subject's face and neck only partly visible at the edge of the frame.

Her grandson Owen came up the lane with a flask under his arm and a face that said he had come to talk her into the lorry. He set the flask on the wall. A wren was working along the topmost branch, flicking its tail, and he laughed at it, then stopped when he saw how she was watching. "It's dead wood, Gran," he said. "Nothing's going to nest in that."
"Something always nests in what's dead," she said. "Just not what you'd expect." The wren flew off, and for a while there was only the wind in the hedge. Then a smaller bird came back and settled on the fork of the branch, dark as a stroke of ink against the grey sky, its head turned toward the house as though it had been asked to wait.
Owen didn't mention the lorry again. He fetched the saw from the shed, turned it over in his hands, and hung it back on its nail.
