Geometric bear outline on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A bear in profile is drawn as an outline built from angular, faceted lines, with straight segments forming the body, legs, head and shading stripes. The linework is a uniform black, with no shading or fill inside the shape, and the tattoo sits on pale skin against a soft grey background. The composition places the bear horizontally across the middle of the forearm, with a grey fabric sleeve folded at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The farmer's boy came into the county surveyor's office in Kirkby Stephen on a wet Tuesday, brown paper folded into eight and gripped in fingers still raw from lambing. He unfolded it on Ada Pennock's board and flattened the creases with the side of his hand. "It came down past the old sheepfold," he said, "on two legs, then on four. Nobody believes me."

Ada believed in triangulation, in bearings taken from three fixed points and a theodolite that never lied if you were patient with it. She sat him down, gave him tea in a chipped mug, and asked for the angles. He could only give her shapes: a long back like a slope of scree, a head set low, legs coming down straight as fence posts. So she drew what he described with a steel rule and a hard pencil, every line a straight run between two points she had chosen, nothing curved, because the boy said nothing about the bear had been round.

By four the drawing was finished and the boy had gone home with a copy. Ada stayed late, inking the outline over the pencil, and noticed that the bear was built exactly like the survey plan on the wall, the same faceted ridges, the same stripes where the contours crossed. Somebody had walked that fell with a level and a chain, and the animal had been sitting in the grid all along, waiting to be sighted.

She pinned the plan back where it belonged and left the lamp burning. In the morning the boy's mother rang to say he had gone up the fell at first light with a flask and a box camera, and that the sheepfold gate was standing open.
