Lion head with triangle on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A shaded grey lion head with a full, flowing mane faces forward on the outer forearm. A small gold geometric shape sits on the forehead, and a thin black triangle outline frames the lion behind it. The soft-focus, neutral background keeps the attention on the tattoo.

The lion had come down from the hills the winter the bells at Caldwell froze, and nobody in the valley could say why it chose the wedding. Old Ada Pryce swore it was the smell of the bread. Her grandson swore it was the gold cloth on the bride's shoulders, which caught the light the way a coin catches a candle.

It walked through the lych gate with its mane full of sleet and stopped in the middle of the lane. The bride's father reached for his stick. The groom, a thin boy who had mended nets since he was nine, stepped in front of his bride without thinking, and the lion looked at him for a long moment. Then it looked past him, at the small brass square the bride's mother had pinned to the lintel above the church door, the one with three corners that never quite closed.
Nobody knew what the lion wanted until the mother took the brass square down and held it out. The lion lowered its great head and touched the gold shape between its eyes with its nose, the way a horse nudges a bridle it knows. Then it turned and went back up into the hills, and the sleet closed over its tracks.
The bride kept the brass square on a cord around her neck for the rest of her life. When people asked her what the lion had been, she shrugged and said it had come to check the triangle was still standing, and that it was.
