Geometric black forearm tattoo with guitar
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a person's forearm and hand while they play a black electric guitar with white cross markings. The tattoo on the forearm uses sharp black linework forming angular, star-like shapes above a solid black band near the elbow. It is rendered in black ink only, with a small mark visible on the hand, and the background includes a Marshall amplifier.

The boat that came in without its crosses was the one the island waited longest for. On Skerra every hull was daubed with white cross-bars before it left the harbour mouth, so the sea would know whose it was and send it home. Hector Lamond painted his own in a hurry the autumn of the great herring year, and when the Fulmar went out ahead of a squall he missed the stern entirely.

His daughter Isla watched from the slipway with a tin of pitch and a bent brush. Her grandmother had taught her the star shapes that were drawn on the beams to point the way home when the lamps failed, sharp points set in a black band like a tarred cuff at the wrist of the hull. Isla cut a template from a biscuit tin, worked the pitch over the stern until it was dark as the sea, and then she took down her father's black-bodied box of an instrument with its six strings and the white cross painted across its face. She climbed the wall to the cairn where the wind was strongest and played the tune every fisher's child knew, the one for counting men by name.
The squall held off for three hours. Around the turn of the tide the Fulmar came round the Nab with her sail torn and her crew bent over the oars, and she came in past the lighthouse with her stern gleaming.
Hector stepped onto the quay and ran his thumb over the new pitch. It was still tacky. He did not ask who had done it. He only said that the sea must have heard the tune and thought better of keeping them.
