Small cross tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black cross is tattooed on the back of a wrist and hand, with the hand wrapped around a microphone stand. The linework is thin and even, with little or no shading, and the cross is the only tattoo visible. The photograph is monochrome, with a shallow depth of field that blurs the background and hair at the left edge.

The stand at the Gaiety Rooms had been bolted to the same boards since before the war, and its clamp had not been oiled in living memory. Vera Lamb closed her fist round the chrome anyway, the way she closed it round everything that had ever tried to shake her. Under the lamp her cross stood out small and black on the back of her hand, a fourpenny needle and a stick of Indian ink from a sailor in Shadwell, done the summer she was fourteen and too proud to cry.

The room was half empty, which was half more than Harold Teague had promised. He sat at the bar with his bowler on the stool beside him, saving it for a friend who never came. Between verses she counted the rings on the barman's fingers, then a cough at the back, then the clatter of a dropped tray. She sang through all of it. Singing through noise was the only thing anyone had ever paid her for.

When the last note died, Harold lifted his bowler, dropped a ten-shilling note into the crown, and walked out without a word. Vera waited for the door to swing shut before she fished the hat out of the sawdust. Inside the lining was a folded scrap in pencil: an address in Shadwell and one line. Bring the needle, Vera. I kept the ink.

She slid the microphone off its stand and held it against her chest like a hymnbook until the lamps went out one by one.
