Geometric face portrait on the thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a female face and curled hair built from interlocking triangles and angular facets, drawn in thin black lines. The linework is fine and hatched, with the darker areas in the eyes, brows, lips and hair creating depth. It is in black ink only, set against pale skin on the upper thigh, with a grey clothing edge at the right of the frame.

The wasps had got into the windfalls by the time Wrenna Dodd reached the bottom row, so she worked with her sleeves down and the chain looped over one shoulder. It was the last week of August and the new owners wanted the Lower Orchard pegged before the lorries came for the Bramleys. She set each stake where her father's old theodolite said it should go, then wrote the bearing in the field book in pencil, because ink ran in the heat.

The estate office had been locked for eleven years. Inside, under a tin of rivets and a calendar stopped at 1931, she found a survey ledger with a sketch pressed into its back cover. Someone had drawn a woman's face entirely from triangles, the hair a crowd of small angled facets, the shadows built up in tiny hatched strokes so fine she had to hold the page to the window. Under it, in faded brown ink, were the initials E.M. and the words, all triangles hold.
Her father had said the same thing whenever a fence sagged or a shed listed. A triangle is the only shape that cannot be pushed out of true. That evening she laid the 1931 planting plan over her own grid and saw that the trees had never been set in rows at all. Each cluster of old stock fell onto a lattice of lines, and when she traced the lines with her thumb, a face came up out of the paper: a brow near the spring, a mouth along the old boundary wall.
On the last morning she drove the final peg at the gate, where the lower mouth of the face would have closed. A plum dropped beside her boot and split open, and the wasps rose and settled again. She wrote the bearing, then under it, in her own neat capitals, CHECKED. HOLDS.
