Geometric mandala tattoo across both hands
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Both hands are shown palms down on a dark leather surface, covered in a symmetrical black mandala design built from concentric rings, triangles and radiating lines. The forearms above the wrists carry further black and grey geometric patterns with dotwork shading. The linework is bold and crisp, with the fill areas in solid black and fine stippled grey, and the image is entirely in black ink against the dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Sit down, sit, the bench is dry this side. You want to know how the knot garden at Harrowgate came to be drawn the way it is, with every bed answering the one across from it? Then listen, because my grandmother's father did the drawing, and he did it with a pair of brass dividers and a length of cord and no patience at all.

He had a rule about circles. Start from the centre, he said, and never lift the point. Strike the first ring, then the second, and let each one tell you where the triangles must sit, because a triangle that does not touch the ring is a lie told by a man in a hurry. He laid out forty-eight beds that way in the summer of the great drought, pegging the cord each morning while the box hedges wilted around him. The gardener's boy said it was madness. The old man said madness was drawing a path that went nowhere and calling it a view.
When the last bed was cut he had the boy stand at the middle and turn slowly. Every line ran out from that one spot like the spokes of a wheel that had decided to stay put. Then he took the boy's hands, palms down on the warm stone of the sundial, and traced the rings with his thumbs so the boy would know the pattern by touch, not by eye, for eyes lie about symmetry and hands do not.
That is why, when the frost came in January, the beds held their shape under snow and the paths stayed true. And it is why you will never find me pulling a weed out of the outer ring. Mind your feet.
