Geometric eye and leaves on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm tattoo shows an eye inside a triangle, topped by a cluster of leaves, with a diamond containing a hash-like symbol at the centre. Crescent shapes, stacked triangles and a pair of leaves sit below, with a small angular symbol near the wrist. The design is built from stippled dotwork shading and solid black fills in black and grey, set against a plain dark grey background.

Frost had sealed the top field overnight, and Ruth Ashdown walked out before the light to count the ewes, as her father had, with the slate tucked under her arm. The slate was the old kind, edged in tin, and on it he had scratched a grid of diamonds and crescents in a hand that grew smaller as the years went on. She had never understood the symbols. He had called them the weather's notes.

At the gate she found the hurdle down and a line of prints crossing the white toward the beck. They were not sheep's. Three toes, long strides, the mark of someone who walked without hurry. She followed them past the hawthorn, where a single dark leaf still clung, curled and pinned to the frost like a seal on a letter.
The prints ended at the stone wall where her father had set a diamond-shaped stone to mark the boundary. Someone had dragged a finger through the rime on its face, tracing a hash of four lines. Ruth touched the same shape on her slate, then the crescent beside it, and understood that the grid was not a map of the farm but a list of what had been counted, and by whom.
She turned to the flock. Forty-one ewes stood in a clump, breath rising in one column, and she counted them twice, the way he had, saying each number aloud until the sum came out even. Forty-two, she said, to the hills and the empty gap. Then she wrote it down, and left the last square blank.
