Geometric portrait with roses on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black linework tattoo shows a woman's face built from angular, faceted planes, wearing a crown of flowers at the top of the design. Below the face, two large roses and a smaller bloom sit against the forearm, drawn with thin, even outlines and no shading. The image is a close, straight-on view of the arm against a pale background, with the design filling most of the frame.

The lens came over on the supply boat in forty-one crates, and Tomas the glazier swore on his mother that not one of its planes was square. He set it on the iron drum at the top of Scarrow Light with a spirit level and a great deal of swearing, and when the lamp was lit the beam came out in hard, angled bars that nobody on the mainland had seen before.

Ada Penhallow kept the light after her husband went into the sea off the Hen Rock. She would not let anyone else touch the glass. Every morning she rubbed each facet with vinegar and a square of old wool, and every evening she carried up a jar of roses from the cottage pots, because the salt wind would let nothing grow on the rock but thrift and gulls. She set the jar on the sill below the lens so the blooms stood in the light, and the fishermen said that on a clear night the petals showed through the glass like a crowd of small, patient faces.
In the hard February the storm took a pane from the lens, and the light went out for three nights. The boats were still at sea. The women of Scarrow dragged driftwood to the cliff top and set it burning in a ring. It was a poor thing against the dark, but it kept the rocks in sight of anyone who knew where to look.
By the fifth dusk Tomas had come back across the causeway with a new pane wrapped in sacking, and the lamp burned again. A cutter came round the point low in the water, her sails patched and her crew silent at the rail. When they looked up at the tower they saw the jar of roses glowing in the turning light, and they steered for it as if it had been set there for them.
