A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the lane by four, so Mrs Ostler gave up on the coach and let the stranded travellers take the back room by the fire. I was the only one who knew how to pin a collar, so when the young man in the grey suit asked me to take in his jacket before the dance, I said yes, mostly because the pomade in his hair had made the whole room smell like a Saturday in Leeds.

He had a pompadour built like a wave about to break, and he'd brought a tin of brilliantine the size of a teacup. 'Lorraine's been waiting at the Crown since Tuesday,' he said, not looking at me, but at the window. 'Tell her I came up over the top road. Tell her I didn't bottle it.'

I didn't tell him the top road had been shut since Monday. I took his jacket to the kitchen, sewed the lining where it had split, and listened to the wind try the shutters. When I brought it back, the dance had started in the parlour, a wireless playing something slow and scratchy, and he was standing by the door with his hand out to a woman in a green dress who had walked in from the snow with frost on her eyelashes. She had come over the top road after all.

They did not dance. They stood in the doorway and kissed as if the drifts outside had finally let them through, and the whole room went quiet and studied its boots. Mrs Ostler sniffed and poured the sherry. I hung the jacket on the newel post and went back to my mending, thinking that some people spend their lives hunting for a road that is open, and then one day it is, and it runs straight to the door.
