Geometric triangles and lotus on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A gloved tattooist uses a tattoo machine on a forearm, adding a geometric design of stacked triangles, a star-like outline and a lotus-like shape. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth and grey, with the upper triangles showing soft reddish tones that may be fresh ink or skin irritation. The composition is close and angled, with the artist's hands filling the lower half of the frame.

Dear Maud,

Your bridegroom's mother came to the office on Tuesday with her tracing paper rolled under one arm and a face like a closed door, and I spent two hours with her at the drawing board before she would let me see the window she wanted copied. It was your mother's pattern, the one from the back of the sampler: three triangles stacked point to point, with a lotus opening beneath them the way Father used to draw it for the church lamps. She wanted it in glass for the chapel at Hebden, and she wanted it exact.
I worked it up with the compass and the ebony rule until the lines sat clean, and by Thursday the thing had a kind of weight to it, as if the triangles were holding the lotus up by main force. The star she had sketched across the base I redrew with its six points true, then sat looking at it for a long time. Something was off. A star made of two triangles always closes, and I did not like that it closed around nothing.
So I left one point open. Just the one, where the lower triangle meets the lotus, a gap no wider than a pin. The glazier will think it a mistake. Mrs Ashworth will think it a mistake. I have decided it is not mine to close.
Come home on Saturday before the banns and I will show you the tracing. Bring your good gloves. The light in that chapel comes in sideways at eleven, and you will want to see for yourself where the gap falls.
Love, Nell
