Geometric arrow on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black arrow runs diagonally across the forearm, with a triangular head at the lower left and a diamond-shaped tip at the upper right. The arrow shaft is a single thin line, and the feathers and head are built from outlined triangles with small dots and tick marks along the shaft. The photograph is black and white, with the arm shown against a dark top.

The sign painter Mo Haskell drew arrows on everything the fair owned, and he never once drew one pointing at a prize. Ask him why and he'd tap the chalk against his teeth and say a shaft goes where it's sent, not where people want it. I was nineteen the summer he let me hold the stencil for the rifle gallery, and I thought I'd been trusted with something precious.

The rule of the stencil was triangles, always outlined and never filled. Solid things belong to the ground, he said, and feathers are air, so you draw them with edges. Beside the shaft he'd put a small dot for every town where the rain had cost us a night's takings, and a tick across the line for every county we crossed in the lorry. By August the board had more ticks than the gallery had ducks.
On the last night of the season we were loading the wagon while the Ferris wheel cooled in the dark. Mo sat on the step and drew one freehand across my arm with a biro, the head near my wrist and the diamond tip running up toward the elbow. He said the head should always be the part the crowd can't see. I asked what it was aimed at.
He pointed down the lane, past the dark rides and the sleeping tent, towards the south road. 'Wherever the next pitch is,' he said, 'and it'll be wrong by Tuesday, so draw it true anyway.' Years on, I still rub the ink with my thumb when I pass a green road sign, and the shaft stays straight under my fingers, the way he taught me to keep it.
