Geometric wing and bird on chest and shoulder

Geometric · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A geometric tattoo covers the shoulder and upper chest, with a faceted, feather-like wing running from the shoulder and a stylised bird head with an orange beak beside a small outlined heart. The linework is bold and dark, with the facets shaded in soft greys and a few pale highlights. Orange and pink accents appear within a mostly grey palette, set against pale skin.

The glazier's van was already outside St Botolph's when Ruth arrived, its back doors open on crates packed in yesterday's Ledger. Inside, the north aisle smelled of wet plaster and paraffin. Mr Harker had propped the broken panel against a pew, and Ruth knelt beside it with her satchel still on her shoulder. The panel showed a goose rising out of a lattice of grey and amber glass, its beak a flame of orange, its neck bent toward a small red heart that someone in 1862 had leaded in as an afterthought.

'Can it be saved?' she asked. Harker sucked his teeth. 'Glass can be saved. The story's another matter.' He held up a shard shaped like a wing tip, all facets, the lead cracked clean through. 'Your grandfather cut these himself, didn't he?' Ruth had not known that. She had only been told the family had made glass in Wexley since the coaching inn, and that the rest was nobody's business.

She spent three evenings at the bench in the back of the shop, cutting replacement facets from a sheet of pale grey glass. Each cut ran along the grain the way her grandfather had shown her: score, then tap, until the line gave. On the third night the last piece dropped free into her palm, and she saw that the heart was not an afterthought at all. Its lead ran into the goose's breast and out again, so the bird had been flying toward it all along.

On Sunday she carried the panel back up the aisle and set it in its frame. Light from the east window came through the new facets and laid a wing across the flagstones. Harker stood at the back with his cap in his hands and said nothing, which from him was praise. Ruth stayed kneeling until the organ started, watching the orange beak burn above the heart as though the goose had only paused there on its way somewhere else.
