The last of the Bramley trees came down on a Thursday in August, and by Friday Dorothy Penhale had the brash piled between the rows, dry limbs stacked like kindling for a church fête. She had told the contractor to leave the old tree by the gate standing, but he had cut it anyway, and now the wood sat in the sun smelling of sap and vinegar.

Her son Tom came out at dusk with a can of paraffin he should not have brought. "Not yet," she said. She wanted to wait until the wind dropped, so the smoke would climb straight rather than roll across the lane to the Hardings' washing. They stood at the edge of the stubble and watched the sky go the colour of weak tea.

When the fire finally caught it went up with a crack like a rifle. Sparks rose in a long column, and then the smoke pulled itself into a shape: a bird with its wings thrown wide, a neck lifted, a fan of tail feathers streaming down toward the grass. Tom swore softly. Dorothy did not. She had seen the heron's outline on the pond ice every winter of her childhood and knew what a trick of heat looked like.

Still, she fetched the folding chair and sat with her hands in her lap until the shape came apart over the hedge. In the morning there was only grey ash and a single blackened apple, split open, its core glowing faintly. She took it home and ate it standing at the sink, sweet as anything, and did not tell Tom she had been waiting for something to rise.
