Girl holding a dandelion on the side

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small cartoon-style girl sits at the base of a dandelion seed head, with the stem running down the skin and seeds drifting up and across the side of the torso. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or colour. The image is cropped at the chest and hips against a blurred beach and sea background.

Dear Tobin, the wind turned north on Lammas morning and every dandelion clock in the Reach let go at once. I was halfway up the sheep field with the milk pails when the seeds came over the wall like a snowfall that had lost its way. Mother says it is only weather, but you know how she is about the old kingdom's sayings.

Maddie Crane, the miller's girl, was sitting in the ditch with her skirt full of fluff, laughing at the lot of us. She had tied herself to the tallest clock on the hill with a length of green wool, the way the old tellers say the first Queen of Vellmoor rode out to count the stars. "Hold tight," she said, and when the gust came she lifted clean off the grass, boots dangling, one hand gripping the stalk.

We thought she would drop. She didn't. She drifted down the slope like thistledown, past the church and over the millpond, and landed in Father's cabbages with her pockets full of seed. The bailiff wanted her fined for trespass on the king's air. Nobody has ever proved she didn't have the right.

So come home at harvest and bring the good knife. Mother will forgive you the cider if you help me pick the clocks before the wind takes them. I have saved one for you in the blue jar on the sill, its seeds still tight and round, waiting for somebody brave enough to blow.
