Dandelion seeds turning into birds on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, showing a tattoo of a dandelion clock on her upper back near the shoulder blade. Small black birds lift from the seed head and drift upwards towards the neck. The linework is delicate and the ink is solid black, set against a soft, blurred green background.

Here is the strange part, and you may laugh. When the breeze caught them, the seeds did not simply drift. Each one came apart at the top into something with wings, small and dark, no bigger than a thumbnail, and they lifted off the head like swifts off a chimney. I counted forty before I gave up. They went up over the dry stone wall towards the cliff, and the gulls ignored them completely.
Mrs Gillies at the shop says it is a sign that somebody is going to leave. I told her that is what she says about everything. But I keep thinking about the last head at the far end of the field, the one that would not let go until I had nearly reached it. I picked it, and I am not ashamed, and I blew on it out towards the water to see what would happen.
Send word when the ferry runs Thursday. Bring the good thread, I want to mend the net-loft curtains before Father sees them. And tell me if you still have that photograph of us on the pier, the one where we are both squinting. Your sister, Ailsa.
