Two traditional style colour tattoos on the inner wrists and forearms, one showing a glue bottle with a CONSTRUCT banner and one showing scissors with a CREATE banner, both with blue and red flowers.

Glue bottle and scissors wrist tattoos

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two tattoos sit side by side on the inner wrists. The left shows a glue bottle with a brush top, wrapped in a yellow banner reading CONSTRUCT, framed by blue flowers and green leaves. The right shows a pair of scissors with a yellow banner reading CREATE, surrounded by red and blue flowers and leaves. Bold black outlines, flat fills and bright colour define both designs against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, and pass the bread along, because the bride's grandmother never let anyone leave a wedding without the story of the Pemberton sisters and the bottle of glue. Ada was the one who cut. Marion was the one who stuck. Between them they made the costumes for every pantomime in Wrexley for thirty years, and they fought the whole time, the way sisters do over who has the good shears.

Ada kept her scissors on a nail by the back door, where the cat could not reach them. Marion kept the glue, a brown bottle with a brush in its neck that she dipped and dabbed until the stuff went hard and stank of vinegar. Neither would touch the other's tools. One January the pantomime dame's bodice split in the middle of the church hall, the curtain was up in an hour, and Ada stood there with the scissors open and her mouth shut tight, while Marion came in from the cold with a bottle in each hand and no word for her at all.

So they worked it out with their hands. Ada cut the new lining from a bolt of old green silk, Marion brushed the seams flat so they would hold under the lights, and neither of them said sorry, which was how the pair of them always said it. The dame went on that night and got the biggest laugh of the season.

The bottle still sits on the Pembertons' shelf, and the scissors still hang on the nail. Ada's girls say the glue was never the important thing. Mind you, I would not say that to Marion.
